I am 29 years old. Which means I am not old enough to have witnessed with my own two eyes how great the Cowboys used to be. I imagine those times were amazing. I couldn’t even imagine what it would be like being a fan of a current dynasty. In my entire time of living I have seen one NBA championship and one World Series win (while witnessing more losses in championships).
My dad used to always tell me if players would beat us Jerry Jones would just go sign them. Deion Sanders and Charles Haley were great with San Francisco, then come be even better in Dallas. There truly was a desire to be the best and they made it happen no matter what. Was that Jimmy Johnson? Has Jerry lost his edge?
The Cowboys do a great job of drafting and developing players there’s no denying that. Our team is loaded with stars that we drafted and are annual pro bowl/ all pro talents. We don’t however regularly make big splash trades, or sign big name free agents. Shaq Leonard is just the latest example. He picks the Eagles over the Cowboys and it is just another big miss. Sure we traded for a couple of aging decent players Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore, but where is the big splash? The Eagles and 49ers are constantly making moves. The 49ers in the last year have traded for CMC, Randy Gregory, and Chase Young while already having probably the best collection of talent in the NFL.
Can the Cowboys keep up with the top teams in the NFC with Jerry always believing we’re just good enough? The best trade the Cowboys have made in years was Amari Cooper who we later gave away for basically nothing while opting to keep paying Ezekiel Elliott who we later literally paid to leave.
What is the solution? Is it possible for an 81 year old man to change his ways now? Is it possible for him to relate to these players and instill confidence that Dallas is the place for them? If Jerry ever finally gives up control of the organization would his son do a better job? For some reason I doubt that.
I think it is time for Dallas to realize while yes, we have a good collection of talent there is clearly teams that seem to be much better at gathering talent around them. I am not even sure that the salary cap is real in San Fransisco, and I hope when Brock gets paid this whole thing crumbles. Until then we are stuck hoping our players can play our best game and beat them. Which is possible, but extremely hard with where we are today.
